FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nashville, Tennessee — June 17, 2025 — The Davidson County Republican Party’s Executive Committee strongly urges Metro Council members to vote against Mayor Freddie O’Connell’s proposed budget and Council Member Delicia Porterfield’s substitute budget, which would increase property taxes by 26% to 39%. The GOP Nashville Executive Committee calls on all council members to deliver a resolute ‘NO’ vote, rejecting these fiscally irresponsible proposals.
The proposed budgets threaten Nashville’s financial stability, risking a trajectory similar to cities and states like Baltimore, Detroit, and California. Nashville faces a pivotal moment to embrace fiscal discipline, eliminate debt, and reduce reliance on federal and state funding.
“Metro Council members must consider the burden their constituents will face with this new property tax bill,” said Jason B. Weakley, Chairman of GOP Nashville. “Relentless property tax hikes—one of the most regressive forms of taxation—make Nashville unaffordable for families, seniors, homeowners, and renters, pushing them to neighboring counties.”
These budgets sustain inefficient departments, enable waste and abuse, and funnel millions to non-governmental organizations without adequate oversight. GOP Nashville stands with residents demanding transparency, accountability, and fiscal restraint.
Looking to 2027, when Nashville will elect a new 20-member Metro Council, GOP Nashville pledges to support candidates who are committed to eliminating debt, reducing federal dependency, and advocating for state reforms to limit unchecked property tax increases (UPTI).
Council members, your vote today will resonate with your constituents. GOP Nashville calls on every Metro Council member who values fiscal responsibility, transparency, and Nashville’s prosperity to vote NO on this budget.
